3d printing will definitely have a big impact on all kinds of ceramics including tiles. Not it’s just a matter of bringing down the cost. There will be machines in the future that can rapidly produce custom 3d printed ceramics on an industrial scale.

When you imagine all the development hours that went into the creation of the internet and then apply all those hours to digital manufacturing, it is possible to imagine a future where 3d printed things are standard items.

So the 3D printed pen project is still in progress. The second iteration came back cleaned today (full of printing errors, but none that a razor couldn’t fix), and I was able to fully assemble it without the O-Ring. It is still amazing to me that this is possible with 3d printing! I have often heard that complexity is free with 3d printing, but the other thing that is free is assembly.

This is a good example of a situation where the specificity of cad and 3d printing are well used. The tight integration of electronics and components allow for hacking that is actually not so hacked. Right now I think a mass produced motor will probably work, better, but soon this type of manufacturing will surely lead to some revolutionary advances.

Some really nice forms in a great material. I wonder how long it will take before a commercial desktop 3d printer that can print in ceramics is released on the market. I would also like to try wax.
